Kuba/Cuba
Mit Kuba verbindet man zunächst chromblitzende Oldtimer, pastellfarbene Kolonialbauten, Zigarren, Rum, Salsa-Rhythmen, Zuckerinsel, traumhafte Strände, Fidel Castro und "Che" Guevara, und eventuell noch die Kuba Krise (1963) sowie Guantanamo. Mit dieser erwartungsvollen Vorstellung sind auch wir nach Kuba gereist und haben dabei vergessen unsere europäischen Normvorstellungen zurück zu lassen.
When Cuba comes to your mind you most likely think of chrome shining oldtimers, pastel colored colonial buildings, cigars, rum, salsa rhythms, sugar island, gorgeous beaches, Fidel Castro and "Che" Guevara, and perhaps the Cuban missile crises (1963) as well as Guantanamo. We travelled to Cuba with these expectations and forgot to leave our European standards back home.
Wir wollen Kuba in all seinen Facetten kennenlernen und beginnen unseren Aufenthalt am Strand mit türkisblauem Wasser und den Annehmlichkeiten einer All-inclusive Hotelanlage.
Wir want to experience all the different ways of life of Cuba and start our journey at an all-inclusive hotel with its pleasant amenities and a beach with turquoise blue water.
Nach einer Woche "Pauschalurlaub" springen wir von der Strandliege mitten hinein in den ganz normalen kubanischen Alltag und reisen in Eigenregie durchs Land. Schnell sehen wir uns mit der prekären wirtschaftlichen Lage, als Auswirkung der lang anhaltenden Sanktionen und des Sozialismus, konfrontiert. Leere Läden (sofern es überhaupt welche gibt), mangelhafter Service, überhöhte Preise, marode Bausubstanz und schlechtes Essen stehen im Gegensatz zur herzlichen Gastfreundschaft und allgegenwärtigen Lebensfreude der Kubaner!
Wir fahren mit dem Bus von Varadero in die Stadt Trinidad.
A week of all-inclusive holidays is over. It's time for us to vacate the beach chairs and embark on our self guided trip to experience the Cuban way of life. Soon we are confronted with the precarious economic situation largely a consequence of the enduring sanctions and socialism. Empty shops (if there are any to start with), poor services, overpricing, ailing building fabrics and poor food are in contrast to the warm hospitality and joy of life of the Cubans!
We take a bus from Varadero to the town of Trinidad.
Trinidad's Blütezeit lag im 18. Jahrhundert. Durch Sklavenhandel, Zuckerrohranbau sowie Zuckerhandel gelangte es zu großem Reichtum und avancierte zum wichtigsten Handelszentrum von ganz Kuba. Zu dieser Zeit gab es bis zu 300.000 Sklaven auf der Insel. Doch bereits Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts, nach dem ersten Unabhängigkeitskrieg gegen Spanien und der Befreiung der Sklaven brach Trinidad's Wirtschaft zusammen. Fast alle Zuckerfabriken wurden im Krieg zerstört.
Trinidad's boom time was in the 18th century. Slave trade, sugarcane cultivation and trade propelled it to enormous wealth and the most important trade centre of Cuba. Approx. 300,000 slaves worked on the island during this time. However, the economy of Trinidad collapsed after the first independence war against Spain and the liberation of slaves towards the end of the 18th century. Almost all sugar mills were destroyed during the war.
Der Verfall nahm seinen Lauf und aufwendige Restaurierungen begannen erst nach der Revolution in den 1960iger Jahren. Heute gehört die Stadt zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe und lebt hauptsächlich vom Tourismus.
Dilapidation took its route and costly restorations only started after the revolution during the 1960ies. Today, Trinidad is part of the UNESCO world heritage and is largely dependent on tourism.

Das Ende als Offline-Insel!! Erst 2015 hat das Internet auf Kuba Einzug erhalten. Jedoch nicht in Form von Privatanschlüssen, sondern man muss öffentliche WLAN Hotspots aufsuchen. Mit einer Guthabenkarte kann man dann 60 Minuten im Internet surfen, sofern man überhaupt reinkommt! Die Konkurrenz ist groß!!
The end of an "Offline-Island!! The internet made it to Cuba in 2015, however, not for every private home. Instead you have to locate a public WLAN hotspot. A prepaid card allows you to surf for 60 minutes in the internet, if you are lucky enough to access it. The competition is huge!!
Louis sitzt jeden Tag auf seiner Bank in einer Gasse, raucht genüsslich seine Zigarre und unterhält sich mit Passanten. Trotz entbehrungsreicher Lebensbedingungen unter Sozialismus und Sanktionen sind die Kubaner so freundliche, hilfsbereite und sympathische Menschen.
Every day, Louis is sitting on his bench in an alley, smoking his cigar with a pleasure and chatting with passer-bys. The Cubans are really friendly, helpful and pleasant people despite their deprived living conditions under socialism and sanctions.
Der Zucker galt lange als wichtigstes Exportprodukt und Garant für ausländische Devisen. Doch inzwischen ist die Zuckerproduktion um mehr als die Hälfte gesunken und viele Zuckermühlen wurden aufgegeben.
Sugar was for a long time the most important export product and foreign reserve guaranty of Cuba. Until recently, however, the sugar production more than halved and a large number of sugar mills have been shut down.
Wir fahren mit einem Zug aus den 60iger Jahren 1 1/2 Stunden in das ca 10km entfernte Valle de los Ingenios zu einer vor sich hin rostenden Zuckermühle. Im 18. und 19. Jh. arbeiteten im Tal tausende Sklaven auf rund 50 Zuckermühlen, mit deren Erlös die Zuckerbarone ihr luxuriöses Leben finanzierten.
We take a train, probably manufactured in the early 60ies, to an approx 6 mile distant rusting sugar mill in the Valle de los Ingenious. It took us 1 1/2 hour for a one way journey. During the 18th and 19th century thousands of slaves worked on 50 sugar mills in the valley and financing the luxury lives of the sugar barons.
Für die lange Strecke über Cienfuegos und Soroa nach Vinales mieten wir uns für drei Tage ein Auto. Über Staus brauchen wir uns keine Gedanken zu machen, auch wenn wir uns die Straße mit abenteuerlichen Gefährten teilen müssen. Abgasnormen und Tüv gibt es nicht.
For a three day journey and a rather long stretch via Cienfuegos and Soroa to Vinales we decide to rent a vehicle. We don't have to worry about traffic jams, even though we have to share the roads with rather adventurous vehicles. Emission standards and roadworthy checks are not really existent.
Den ersten Zwischenstopp legen wir in Cienfuegos ein, auch als die "Perle des Südens" im Reiseführer beschrieben. Die "Perle", den "charmanten Flair" und das "französische Ambiente" konnten wir nicht wirklich finden, dafür aber ein paar gut restaurierte Prachtbauten.
Our first stopover is Cienfuegos, also described in travel books as the "Pearl of the South". We couldn't really find the "Pearl", nor the "charming flair" and the "French Ambiente", just some really beautiful restored buildings.
Das prachtvollste Gebäude von Cienfuegos ist wohl der Palacio del Valle. Als Spanier wollte Don del Valle den maurischen Stil der Alhambra nachbilden und investierte 1913 ca 1,5 Mio Dollar für den Ausbau eines Landhauses in diesen Palast.
The Palacio del Valle is probably the most splendid building in Cienfuegos. As Spaniard, Don del Valle intended to recreate the moorish arabic style of the Alhambra and invested 1913 approx. 1.5 million Dollar upgrading a country home into this palace.
Dann geht es auf der dreispurigen Autobahn in Richtung Soroa. Auch hier keine Staugefahr, obwohl auch Pferdekarren die "Autopista" benutzen!!
We then take the three lane motorway to Soroa. No traffic jams here either, even though the "autopista" is used by horse carriages.
Soroa ist nicht mehr als ein Dorf mit ein paar Häuschen. Die Hauptattraktion ist der kleine Orchideen Garten.
Soroa is no more than a little town with a few houses. The main attraction is the small orchid garden.
Im Anschluss an den Orchideen Garten erkunden wir die Umgebung noch ein wenig zu Fuß und stoßen ganz unverhofft auf diese urige Bar mit herrlicher Aussicht ins Tal.
After a visit of the orchard garden we decide to explore the nearby vicinity. By coincidence we locate this unique bar with its superb vista!
Auf unserer letzten Etappe mit dem Mietwagen nach Vinales entscheiden wir uns gegen die schnellere Touristenroute und fahren eine marode Landstraße durch abgelegene Dörfer. Wir sind zwar recht lange unterwegs, dafür können wir schöne und interessante Fotomotive festhalten.
Instead of taking the faster tourist route for our last stretch with the rental car to Vinales, we decide to drive along a country road which is in desparate need of repair. While passing remote villages and taking much longer than planned, we manage to take some great and interesting photos.

Farbe verbessert zwar nicht die Bausubstanz, sieht dafür aber fröhlich aus. Von kräftig bis pastellfarben alles dabei, aber immer hübsch kombiniert!!
Paint does not improve the building fabric, however, it looks pretty cheerful. Everything from bright to pastel colors, but always in beautiful compositions!!

Ein echter Biozaun - Aststücke werden als Zaunmaterial benutzt, scheinen wunderbar Fuß zu fassen und wachsen zum "Baumzaun" heran.

Das Dorf Vinales liegt idyllisch zwischen Tabakfeldern in einer bizarren Kalksteinlandschaft. Wir haben uns für eine Woche in einer netten Casa Particulares - kubanisches B&B - eingemietet.
The village Vinales is quaintly located in between tobacco fields and a bizarre looking limestone landscape. We rent a nice casa particulares - Cuban B&B - for one week.
Aussaat des Tabaks ist im Oktober, geerntet wird zwischen Januar und März. Die kleinen Schuppen, häufig aus Palmenstroh, sind die "Casas de Tabaco", die Trockenschuppen. Dort sind die Tabakblätter aufgehängt und schwitzen ihre Feuchtigkeit aus. Im Anschluss werden die Blätter dreimal fermentiert. Dieser Prozess dauert mehrere Monate.
Tobacco is sowed in October and harvested during January until March. The little barns, often built of palm straw, are the "Casas de Tabaco", the barns for drying. The tobacco leaves hang inside for the moisture to evaporate. Thereafter the leaves are fermented for at least three times which lasts a couple of months.
Die Gegend um Vinales eignet sich gut für Fahrradtouren und Spaziergänge. Einmal mieten wir uns einen "Drahtesel"- jeder vierbeinige Esel wäre gemütlicher gewesen - danach bevorzugen wir unsere eigenen Füße, um die Umgebung zu erkunden.
The area around Vinales is quite suitable for bicycle tours and hiking excursions. We rent a "sort of bicycle" for one day - every "four legged" donkey ride would have been more comfortable - thereafter we prefer our feet for further excursions.
Auf einer unserer Wanderungen stoßen wir zufällig auf diese Öko-Finca mit Restaurant. Wir sind von der schönen Aussicht ganz begeistert und erkundigen uns nach dem Abendessen - Menü aus dem Biogarten. Das hört sich gesund an und ein romatischer Sonnenuntergang ist inklusive!
By coincidence we walk into this Organic-Finca with restaurant during one of our hiking trips. We are enthused by the great view and an inquiry for dinner reveals - menu ingredients produced from own organic garden. This sounds quite healthy and a romantic sunset is inclusive!
Das Valle de Vinales begeistert nicht nur durch schöne Landschaft, sehenswert sind auch die großen Höhlensysteme.
The Valle de Vinales does not only offer a beautiful scenery, worth while visiting are also the huge cave systems.
Die Tropfsteinhöhle, Cueva Santo Tomas, ist mit 46 km Länge über mehrere Ebenen verteilt, die größte erschlossene Höhle Kuba's.
The limestone cave, Cueva Santo Tomas, with a length of 28 miles stretching over several floors, is the largest accessible cave in Cuba.
Egal wo auf Kuba man sich befindet, der Weg zum nächsten Strand ist niemals weit. Das nutzen wir nochmal für einen Tagesausflug und fahren per Sammeltaxi zum Inselchen Cayo Jutias. Für die 55km lange Strecke benötigen wir ca zwei Stunden - soviel zum Zustand der Straßen!!
Unser Taxi war zwar kein echter Oldtimer, aber trotzdem ein Unikum. Außen ein Buick, innen ein Mercedes - die Kubaner sind kreative Kombinierer, nur keine der Armaturenanzeigen hat funktioniert!!
It doesn't really matter where you are in Cuba, the next beach is never far away. Once more we take the opportunity for a day trip and drive with a group taxi to the little island of Cayo Jutias. It takes us approx. two hours for the 35 miles stretch - it tells you something about the road conditions!!
Our taxi wasn't really an Oldtimer, but nevertheless a unique vehicle. It looks like a Buick from outside and a Mercedes from inside. The Cubans are creative in combining different models - none of the dashboard electronics were working though!!
Es ist einfach traumhaft, das türkisblaue Wasser ist genauso warm wie die Luft, 27 Grad, herrlich. Und das im Dezember!!
It is just gorgeous, the turquoise blue water is as warm as the air temperature, 76 F, just magnificent. And this during the month of December!!
Zum Schluss haben wir natürlich noch Havanna auf dem Programm. Wagemutig besteigen wir unser "Plymouth-Peugot" Taxi und hoffen, dass es bis Havanna durchhält!!
Finally, Havanna is of course still on our program. We "board" a bit daringly this "Plymouth-Peugot" Taxi and hope it will make the journey to Havanna!!

Das Taxi lädt uns bei unserer Casa Particulares am Rande von Centro Habana ab. Unser Zimmer liegt im oberen Stock eines ziemlich verwinkelten Gebäudes, ist fensterlos, aber dafür ordentlich und sauber.
The cab drops us off at our casa particulares at the outskirts of Centro Habana. Our room is on the upper floor of a rather contorted building, has no windows, but is clean and neat.
Havanna ist eine Stadt der Kontraste. Aufwendig restaurierte Kolonialbauten in Habana Vieja - der Altstadt, ruinenhafte Wohnhäuser in Centro Habana, dem Verfall ausgesetzte Gebäude säumen den Malecon - Havanna's heruntergekommene Uferpromenade und dazwischen die allgegenwärtigen Erinnerungen an die Revolution - vielseitiger kann eine Stadt nicht sein, aber genau das macht sie so interessant.
Havanna is a city full of contrasts. Costly restored colonial building in Habana Vieja - the old city, ruin like residential buildings in Centro Habana, deteriorating buildings along the Malecon - Havanna's fading esplanade and in between ubiquitous recollections of the revolution - a city can't be more versatile, but this is exactly what makes Havanna so interesting.

In Centro Habana bekommt man einen Eindruck vom schwierigen Alltagsleben hinter den bröckelnden Fassaden. Mobile Verkäufer mit Handwagen verkaufen das Wenige das es gibt, Kinder spielen Fußball wo immer sich eine freie Fläche findet, Oldtimer werden versucht zu reparieren, Schlaglöcher und Müll prägen das Straßenbild.
A real impression of the daily challenges is found behind the crumbling facades of Centro Habana. Mobile vendors with carts trying to sell the very few items available, kids playing soccer where ever they find a flat area, desparate attempts to repair Oldtimers, potholes and garbage shape the streets.
Selbst in Havanna finden wir kaum einen Einkaufsladen, obwohl hier rund zwei Millionen Menschen leben. Wir mussten erst eine Art siebten Sinn entwickeln, um heraus zu finden, wo es etwas Essbares zu kaufen gibt - oder gehen wir doch lieber ins Restaurant? Wo kaufen die eigentlich ihre Zutaten?
Für die kubanischen Kochkünste würden wir keine Gourmet Sterne verteilen. Ein traditionelles kubanisches Menü besteht aus Gemüsesuppe, dann Reis mit schwarzen Bohnen, Süßkartoffel, Kochbananen und wahlweise Fisch oder Schuhsohlen - äh Fleisch. Das Ganze ist ungewürzt und das Gemüse "tot" gekocht. Der Nachtisch ist so zuckersüß, dass wir lieber darauf verzichten!! Kuba wäre ein ideales Land zum Abnehmen!!
Even in Havanna we struggle to locate a grocery store, even though roughly two million people live in the city. We first had to develop a sort of "seventh sense" in order to find places where we could buy food - or may be we rather go eat in a restaurant? Where do they buy their ingredients?
Well, we would not allot gourmet awards to Cuban cookery. A traditional Cuban menu consists of vegetable soup, followed by rice with black beans, sweet potatoes, plantains and either fish or "shoe sole" - eh beef. All this with no spices and the veggies are cooked to "death"! Dessert is sugar sweet, so we rather decline. Cuba would be a great country for a diet!!
Die Sehenswürdigkeiten und Touristenströme findet man jedoch nicht in Centro Habana, sondern in der teilweise liebevoll sanierten Altstadt Habana Vieja.
You won't find real sightseeing spots and tourists in Centro Habana, but in the partly beautiful restored old city, Habana Vieja, instead.
Wir sind immer noch auf Kuba und nicht in Washington! Das Kapitol wurde 1929 fertig gestellt und dem amerikanischen Vorbild nachempfunden. Zur Zeit wird es aufwendig renoviert. 2018 soll das kubanische Parlament wieder einziehen.
We are still in Cuba and not in Washington! The capitol was completed in 1929 and is a reconstruction of the American model. Currently, expensive renovations are carried out for its planned opening as parlament in 2018.
Das Grand Teatro de La Habana stammt ursprünglich aus dem Jahr 1838 und wurde 1914 durch diesen neobarocken Bau ersetzt. Mit 2.000 Plätzen und Sitz des Nationalballett ist es eins der größten Opernhäuser Lateinamerikas.
The Grand Teatro de la Habana was first built in 1838 and replaced with this neo-baroque building in 1914. With 2,000 seats and head of the national ballet, it is one of the largest opera houses in Latin America.

Ein Teil der Altstadt leuchtet im Glanz farbenfroher Renovierungen, doch schon einen Block weiter ist die Märchenwelt mitunter vorüber und man steht vor dem Verfall preisgegebenen Häusern, die für die Mehrheit der Einwohner Havanna's die Realität bedeuten.
Obwohl nicht alle Gegenden vertrauenserweckend aussehen, haben wir uns zu keinem Zeitpunkt, auch nicht nachts in unbeleuchteten Gassen, unwohl oder bedroht gefühlt. Wir haben die Kubaner durchweg als freundlich und nett empfunden. Selbst die aufdringlichen Stalker (Nachsteller) der Restaurants ließen uns nach einem "Nein danke, wir haben schon gegessen", in Ruhe.
Colorful restorations shine in parts of the old city, but just a block down the road the fabulous world is gone and you stand in front of collapsing buildings which are the reality of Havanna's inhabitants.
Although some areas didn't appear to look safe, we never felt insecure or uneasy, even at night in dark alleys. We experienced the Cubans as friendly and kind people. Even the pushy stalker of restaurants left us alone after a "thank you, we have already eaten"!
Wir verbringen viel Zeit in unserem Lieblingscafe De Escorial an der Plaza Vieja und beobachten das Geschehen. Der Duft nach frisch gemahlenen Kaffee hat uns auf einen leckeren Cappuccino hoffen lassen - doch leider weit gefehlt, die Kubaner können einfach keinen guten Cappo bereiten!!
We spend a lot of our time at our favorite cafe De Escorial on the Plaza Vieja watching all sorts events passing by. The smell of freshly grinded coffee beans raised hope for a nice cappuccino - however, in vain, the Cubans just can't make a good cappo!!

The 72,000sqm big Plaza de La Revolucion is the political centre of the country. All important ministries are placed around the square. Political assemblies take place here with up to 1 million people. Fidel Castro used to hold his legendary and long speeches at this venue!
Der Revolutionär mit dem roten Stern auf der Militärmütze - Ernesto Guevara, auch "Che" genannt, war in den 1970iger Jahren das Symbol für den Freiheitskampf unterdrückter Völker. Sein Porträt und berühmter Spruch - Hasta la Victoria Siempre ("Immer bis zum Sieg") schmücken die Fassade des Innenministeriums.
The revolutionary with the red star on his military cap - Ernesto Guevara, also called "Che" was the symbol for fighting for freedom of oppressed people in 1970ies. His portray and his famous dictum - Hasta la Victoria Siempre ("Always until victory") is displayed on the facade of the ministry of interior.

Eine Stadtrundfahrt mit einem der auf Hochglanz polierten Oldtimer gehört irgendwie zum "Pflichtprogramm" in Havanna.

A city tour with one of the glamorous Oldtimers is a must if you are visiting Havanna.
Es war eine interessante und abwechslungsreiche Reise durch Kuba. Ja, seitdem sich das Land etwas in Richtung Privatwirtschaft durch ausländischen Tourismus geöffnet hat, wollen alle an den Touristen-Dollar mitverdienen. Das kann man ihnen auch nicht übel nehmen, denn wenn zum Beispiel ein junger Professor für seine Lehrtätigkeit umgerechnet USD 65 im Monat verdient, aber im Gegensatz für eine eintägige Touristenführung USD 45 erhält.
Was bleibt, ist die traurige Erkenntnis, dass man als Tourist überall und für alles bezahlen muss, dafür aber keinen angemessenen Gegenwert bekommt. Das mag den Kubanern kurzfristig finanziell zu Gute kommen, aber langfristig könnte der "Schuss nach hinten los gehen"!
We had an interesting and diverse trip through Cuba. Yes, all Cubans would like to get a share of the tourist dollars since the partial move towards private business with foreign tourists. Well, and you can't blame them if you take for example a young professor who is getting paid the equivalent of USD 65 a month for lecturing at a university, but who could earn USD 45 a one day as a tourist guide instead.
What remains, is the sad realization of us as tourists who have to pay for almost everything where ever you are or what ever you do without getting a fair equivalent value. The Cubans might enjoy these financial benefits in the short term, however, it will most likely backfire in the long term!
