Guatemala 2015

Wir wollten zur Palmsonntag Prozession in Antigua, Guatemala, sein. In der Osterwoche findet dort jeden Tag eine Prozession statt. Wir hatten das Gefühl schon am Grenzübergang auf die erste zu treffen.
We wanted to visit an Easter sunday procession in Antigua, Guatemala. Daily procession are held during the week of Easter. We thought we had our first procession already at the border post.

Die Prozession war dann gar nicht so beeindruckend, sondern vielmehr die Menschenmasse die dafür zusammen strömte.
The procession as such was not that impressive, more so the masses of people flocking to the site.
In mühsamer Kleinarbeit werden einzelne Straßen mit kunstvollen Bildern aus bunten Reis und Sand verziert über die dann anschließend die Prozession zieht.
Parts of the street are decorated with artful designs from colored rice and sand, paving the way for the procession.

In dem Gewimmel, das an diesen Tagen das Stadtbild von Antigua beherrscht, kann man wunderbar Leute beobachten und auch fotografieren. Hier jetzt mal ein kleiner Ausschnitt:

....doch Antigua als Stadt ist auch sehr fotogen und hat uns gut gefallen. Einzig die drei Vulkane, die die Stadt umgeben, haben sich nicht wolkenfrei gezeigt.
....and Antigua itself is really beautiful and picturesque. It was only the surrounding volcanoes that never left the cover of the clouds.
.....diese Kleine war unser Lieblingsmotiv!! Maiskolben essen hat seine Tücken.

Wir fahren weiter Richtung Nordosten nach Rio Dulce am Lago de Itzabal gelegen. Von ca 2.000 Höhenmetern auf ca 200. Die Straße läuft parallel zum fruchtbaren Tal des Rio Motagua. Die Bananensorten Chiquita, Dole und Co lassen grüßen !!
We are heading northeast toward Rio Dulce at the Lago de Itzabal. Descending from approx. 2,000 meters altitude to approx. 200 meters. The road runs parallel to the fertile valley of the Rio Motagua. The banana brands Chiquita, Dole and Co "say hi" !!
Unser Fahrzeug bekommt einen Ruhetag und wir erkunden den See per Boot. Das Fort San Felipe gehört zu den Attraktionen, besonders hübsch zeigt es sich von der Seeseite. Es wurde 1652 erbaut, zum Schutz der Dörfer gegen plündernde Piraten, die den Rio Dulce von der Karibik hochfuhren.
Our truck deserves a day rest and we are exploring the lake by boat. The fortress San Felipe is one of the attractions, with the best view from the lakeside. It was built in 1652 to protect the surrounding villages from the pirates who sailed the Rio Dulce inland from the Caribbean Sea.
.....entlang des Rio Dulce hat es aber auch noch weitere Schönheiten.

Wir tauchen weiter in die Welt der Maya ein und besichtigen Tikal in den Regenwäldern des Peten. In der Zeit von ca 700 Jahren v.Chr. bis 900 n.Chr., entwickelte sich Tikal zu einem Zentrum großer religiöser, kultureller und wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung. Hier steht die höchste Tempelpyramide der Maya mit bis zu 65 Metern.
We further explore the secrets of the Maya and visit Tikal located in the rainforest of Peten. During the period from 700 b. Chr. to 900 a. Chr., Tikal emerged to tremendeous religious, cultural and economic importance. Here you find the tallest temple pyramid of the Maya reaching up to 65 meters altitude.
