Wir bringen Tim zum Flughafen nach Las Vegas und holen Tanja gleichzeitig dort ab. Sie verbringt drei Wochen ihrer Osterferien mit uns. Der Süden Utah's mit seinen vielen Nationalparks ist unser Ziel.
We drop off Tim and pick up Tanja at the airport in Las Vegas. Tanja will stay with us for three weeks over the Easter holidays. We are heading to southern Utah with it's many national parks.
Tanja wird mit Sonnenschein und blauem Himmel begrüßt.
In Nevada durchqueren wir erst noch das Valley of Fire. Das Tal des Feuers hat seinen Namen von den 150 Mio Jahre alten, roten Sandsteinformationen, die bei schräg stehender Sonne, besonders farbenprächtig leuchten.

While still in Nevada, we first pass through the Valley of Fire. The valley derived it's name from the 150 million years old red sandstone, which often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun rays.

While we take pictures of rock formations, Tanja is looking for a suitable cactus for a lunch break.

Der Zion National Park....
....über mehrere Millionen Jahre haben Flüsse, Ozeane, Wüsten und Vulkane viele Meter hoch Schlamm, Kalk, Sand und Asche abgelagert. Hoher Druck und Hitze verwandelten das Sediment in Stein. Tektonische Kräfte haben das Colorado Plateau über 3.000 m über den Meeresspiegel angehoben. Im Laufe der Zeit hat Erosion die heutigen gewaltigen Canyons geschaffen. Der Virgin River Canyon im Zion NP ist ungefähr einen halben km breit und zwischen 600 und 900 m tief.
The Zion National Park....
....over million of years streams, oceans, deserts and volcanoes deposited thousands of feet of mud, lime, sand, and ash. Pressure and heat turned sediments to stone. Later, underground forces uplifted the Colorado plateau over 10,000 feet above sea level. Over time erosion created today's mighty canyons. The Virgin River Canyon in Zion NP is approx. half a mile wide and 1,800 to 2,700 feet deep.
Der Blick ins Tal....Angels Landing...hier geht es rechts und links ein paar hundert Meter (genauer gesagt 366 m) steil nach unten...beim Aufstieg zum Angels Landing (Bild rechts unten) sollte man die Höhenangst besser im Tal zurücklassen...

Den Zion NP kann man entweder im Tal am Fluss entlang wandern oder aber die Canyon Rims erklimmen. Wir entscheiden uns für letzteres. Auf dem West Rim Trail an der Schneegrenze angekommen...Zeit für eine Mittagspause.
In Zion NP you can either hike alongside the river in the valley or climb the canyon rims. We decide to go for the latter. We reach the snow line at the West Rim Trail... a good time to have a lunch break.
Hier bekommt der Wanderweg eine ziemliche Schräglage...links geht es steil bergab...! Und jetzt? Wir genießen erstmal die schöne Aussicht.
Our trial turns into a rather sloping condition...to the left it drops down sharply...! What to do now? Well, lets enjoy the awesome view first.
Oben auf dem Rim lag noch Schnee...wir waren für eine Schneewanderung nicht so richtig ausgerüstet, also haben wir nach 4 Stunden Wanderung wieder den Rückweg ins Tal zum Virgin River angetreten.
At the top of the rim was still snow...we weren't really equipped for a snow shoe hike, so after a 4 hour hike we decided to return to the valley of the Virgin river.
Auch die Aussicht vom Observation Point ist grandios....doch der einzige Weg dorthin führt über einen 13 km langen Wanderweg aus dem Tal und es gilt eine Höhendifferenz von 655 m zu bewältigen. Es lohnt sich!
The view from Observation Point is spectacular....however, the only way up there is via an 8 mile hike from the valley with an elevation gain of 1,900 feet. It is worth it!

"Hole-in-the-Rock" Road
Die "Hole-in-the-Rock" Road ist eine Schotterstraße, die 80km lang durch unwegsames Gelände führt. Hier mussten sich die Siedler 1879 einen Weg zum Colorado bahnen. Kein einfaches Unterfangen, dass die Expedition am Ende fast noch zum Scheitern brachte....
An dieser Straße liegen heute viele Ausgangspunkte für interessante und abenteuerliche Wanderungen. Manchmal recht eng und dann wieder mit imposanter Aussicht.
"Hole-in-the-Rock" Road
The "Hole-in-the-Rock" road is a 50 mile long dirt road through rather rugged terrain. In 1879 settlers entered this terra incognita to find a passage to the Colorado river. Not an easy venture, which almost brought the expedition at the end to fail....
Today, there are many trailheads for interesting and adventures hikes along this road. Sometimes very narrow, and then again with awesome views.
Wir haben unseren Spaß sowie einige Herausforderungen im Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. Ein Slot Canyon zeichnet sich durch sehr enge, verschlungene und tiefe Schluchten aus. Ihre Erscheinung spiegelt imposant den Wasserfluss wieder, durch den sie entstanden sind. Manchmal sind akrobatische Fähigkeiten von Nöten und man darf auf keinen Fall zu dick sein!
We have our fun as well as the one odd challenge hiking the Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. Slot canyons are known for it's very narrow, winding and deep gulches. Their appearance mirrors the rushing water that created them. At some sections you would require acrobatic abilities and definitively a slim body.

Der einzige Weg zum Fluss runter, führt durch eine schulterbreite, 46m lange und 4m tiefe Felsspalte. Diese war allerdings nicht leicht zu finden. Von oben sah es zunächst so aus, als ob wir Flügel bräuchten um auf die Fortsetzung des Weges unter uns zu gelangen.
The only route down to the river leads through a shoulder width, 138 feet long and 12 feet deep crack in the wall. It was not easy to spot either. Coming from the rim, it appeared we would need wings to reach the connecting trail at the bottom of the gulch.
....und hier endet die "Hole-in-the-Rock" Road abrupt 550m oberhalb des Colorado Rivers! Die Mission der Pioniere schien zum Scheitern verurteilt. Bereits am Ende ihrer Kräfte musste ihnen dieser Anblick wie Selbstmord erschienen sein. Wie kommt man dort runter? Nur mit viel Dynamit und eisernen Willen konnten die Siedler eine Passage durch eine Felsspalte, dem "Hole-in-the-Rock" schaffen. Nach 45 Tagen knochenharter Arbeit und Anspannung haben sie 70 Familien in 83 Wagen samt Pferde und Rinder runter zum Glen Canyon und heile über den Colorado gebracht. Heute staut an dieser Stelle der Lake Powell den Colorado.
....and here ends the "Hole-in-the-Rock road abrupt 1.800 feet above the Colorado River. The mission of the pioneers was bound to fail. On the brink of starvation, it must have looked like suicide. How do you get down there? With plenty of dynamite and iron will they managed to construct a passage through the "Hole-in-the-Rock". After 45 days of hard labor and tension they savely descended into Glen Canyon and crossed the Colorado River with 70 families in 83 wagons together with their horses and cattle. Today, the Colorado is damed up by Lake Powell.

Willis Creek
Willis Creek, irgendwo in Utah, führt durch einen weiteren Slot Canyon, tief und schmal, als ob jemand eine Kerbe in die Landschaft geschlitzt hätte.
Willis Creek, in the middle of nowhere in Utah, flows through a slot canyon, narrow and deep, as if someone has curved a notch into the landscape.
Das Besondere an ihm ist, daß er keine überraschende Hindernisse bereit hält und wir keine sportlichen Kletteraktionen bewältigen müssen. Wir können einfach so hindurch spazieren. Einzig, der Willis Creek plätschert gemächlich neben her und wir müssen ständig von einer Seite des Baches auf die andere wechseln.
This slot canyon is special in that it does not hold any unexpected barriers which would require climbing excercises. We could actually just stroll along. Only in that Willis Creek ripples alongside the trail, so we have to cross jump it a couple of times.

Capitol Reef NP
Die selben Kräfte, die einst das Colorado Plateau hoben, haben hier eine 100 Meilen breite Falte aufgeworfen. Viele Gesteinsschichten haben Wind und Wasser im Laufe von Millionen Jahren bereits erodiert. Im Capitol Reef NP findet man Felskuppeln, Steilklippen und verschlungene Canyons in imposanten Formationen.
The same forces, that once uplifted the Colorado Plateau, created here a 100 mile wide fold. Wind and water have eroded many upper layers of the ancient fold over million of years. Massive domes, cliffs and twisting canyons of impressive formations are found in the Capitol Reef NP.
Die Dimensionen der Canyonwände sind gewaltig...als Mensch kommen wir uns winzig vor. Die Perpektive von oben gefällt uns besser.
The dimensions of the canyon walls are striking...we as humans feel rather tiny. We prefer the birds view perspective.

Goblin Valley State Park
Die geologische Entstehung der Parks, die wir im Süden Utah's besuchen, ist im Wesentlichen die gleiche, nur die heutigen Formationen und Farben unterscheiden sich in allem was die Natur zu bieten hat. Wo sich heute der Goblin Valley SP befindet, war vor Millionen von Jahren ein riesiger See. Unterirdische Kräfte hoben auch hier das Land, Wind und Wasser erodierten die oberen Schichten, übrig blieben Strukturen, die an Kobolde erinnern.
The geologic history of the parks we visited in southern Utah, is almost identical, however, it is the rock formation and color in all aspects nature can offer, which differentiates them today. Millions of years ago a vast inland sea covered today's area of the Goblin Valley SP. It was sculpted by forces of nature such as uplift and erosion by wind and water. Today, results of these geological forces are witnessed in the stones gnomes inhabiting the valley.

Little Wild Horse Canyon
Zum Abschluss erkunden wir mit Tanja noch einen weiteren Slot Canyon. Udo findet das gar nicht witzig. Es fing alles ganz harmlos an und in unserem Wanderbuch stand unter Schwierigkeitsgrad: Einfach!!!
We decide to discover another slot canyon in order to wind up Tanja's trip. Udo thought that this is not real funny. It started of pretty straight forward and our trail map marked it: Easy!!!
Wir sind hier zwar in der Wüste, aber man sollte beachten, dass normalerweise trockene Slot Canyons das Ergebnis von etlichen Sturzfluten sind. Stimmt....gestern hat es geregnet!! Doch man muss sich nur zu helfen wissen.
We are in the desert here, but you should know, that slot canyons are the result of flash floods forming them. Right...it did rain yesterday!! Okay, all you got to do it help yourself.
Wir waren echt erfindungsreich und mutig die Wasserstellen zu umklettern, doch beim allerletzten Wasserloch blieb uns keine andere Wahl...Schuhe aus und durch das eiskalte Wasser laufen ohne zu sehen wo wir hin treten!!
We were really inventive and brave when climbing around water spots, except for the very last one...we had no choice but to take off our shoes and walk through icy water without really knowing where we would put our next step.
Tanja's Ferien gehen zu Ende und wir sind noch 480 km von Salt Lake City entfernt. Jetzt müssen wir Gas geben, sonst verpasst sie noch den Flieger zurück nach Schottland.
Tanja's holidays are coming to an end and we are 300 miles away from Salt Lake City. We have to speed up now otherwise she will miss her flight back to Scotland.
