Nein, dies ist noch nicht Kalifornien, die Covid-19 Pandemie ist auch immer noch nicht vorbei und die direkte Einreise für Europäer in die USA ist nach wie vor nicht möglich.
Indirekt aber schon - wenn man sich zuvor 14 Tage in einem "Nicht-Covid- Risikoland" aufgehalten hat. Der Schengen Raum gehört nicht dazu, aber z.B. die Dominikanische Republik. So kommt es, dass wir "etwas unfreiwillig" zwei Wochen "Quarantäne am Strand" einschieben!
An das Strandleben haben wir uns sehr schnell gewöhnt und ein fahrender Obsthändler hat unser Wohlbefinden noch gesteigert.
No, this is not yet California, the Covid-19 pandemic is not yet over and the direct travel entry for Europeans to the USA is not yet possible.
Indirect entry, however, is possible if you stay for at least 14 days in a "Non-Covid Risk Country" prior to travelling to the US. The Schengen Area does not belong to those, but the Dominican Republic, for example, does. So, we spend, a bit unwilling, two weeks "quarantine at the beach"!
We get used to the beach-life quite quickly and a local mobile fruit merchant made us feel even more comfortable.
Was uns voran getrieben hat, diese ungewöhnliche Art der Einreise in die USA zu versuchen, ist die PhD Verteidigung von Sohn Tim am 4. August 2021. Erstmals seit Pandemiebeginn, findet diese nicht mehr ausschließlich virtuell statt.
Alles klappt - wir landen am 3. August in San Francisco.

Our son's PhD defense on August 4, 2021, motivated us to try this rather unusual entry into the US. It is the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that a defense is not solely virtual anymore.
Everything works out as planned - we land in San Francisco on August 3.

Unser Fahrzeug hat derweil südlich von Los Angeles, bei Phil und Laura auf der Weinfarm, auf uns gewartet - ganze 11 Monate! Vielen lieben Dank, dass ihr uns das so lange ermöglicht habt.
Nachdem alle Reparaturen erledigt, die mitgebrachten Ersatzteile eingebaut und das Ö,l sowie alle Filter gewechselt wurden, sind wir wieder startklar.
Wir fahren entlang der östlichen Sierra Nevada nach Norden.
Our rig waits for us on the vineyard of Phil and Laura, south of Los Angeles - for almost eleven months. Thank you so much to you both for making this possible for us.
After having all repairs done, the spare parts we had in our luggage stored away, oil and filters changed, we are ready to be on the road again.
We are heading north along the eastern Sierra Nevada.

Zum Auftakt beginnen wir mit einer 3-Tages Wanderung in ca 3.300m Höhe zu den Cottonwood Lakes - ein ambitionierte Einstieg! Es ist einfach wunderschön wieder so ausgiebig in der Natur unterwegs sein.
To begin with, we start with a three day overnight hike at an elevation of 10,500ft to the Cottonwood Lakes - quite an ambitious "kick-off"! It is just wonderful to be so extensively in nature again.
Wir schlagen unser Zelt an einem der vielen Seen auf - Frühstückfelsen in der Sonne und mit Seeblick inklusive.
We pitch our tent at one of the many lakes - a rock for breakfast at a sunny spot and lake view inclusive.
Am nächsten Tag erkunden wir ohne die großen Rucksäcke die Umgebung - auch wenn nicht immer ersichtbar ist wie es weiter geht. Dort oben wollen wir hoch - angeblich führt ein Wanderweg hinauf? Das sieht dann doch eher etwas anstrengend aus - vorsichtshalber füllen wir unsere Wasserflaschen nochmal auf.
We use the next day to explore the vicinity without the heavy backpacks - even though it is not always obvious where the path may lead. We aim for the pass high up - apparently there is a trail? It looks rather a bit strenuous - we better fill our up our water bottles before we head up.
Ja, es gibt tatsächlich einen Weg. Ja, es ist anstrengend! Die Aussicht ist traumhaft - wir haben uns die Mittagspause verdient. Tina: "Jetzt geht das mit Udo's Vogelperspektive und Sitzplatz in Hanglage wieder los!"
Yes, there is indeed a trail. Yes, it is strenuous! The vista is stunning - we deserve a lunch break. Tina:"Now it starts again with Udo's birds eye perspective and cliff seating arrangement!"

Am 3. Tag packen wir unser Zelt wieder ein - drehen aber noch eine Runde an weiteren Seen vorbei, bevor wir zum Camper zurücklaufen. Muir und Cirque Lakes - nur für dich, Tina!
We pack up our tent again on day three - do one further loop along some more lakes, before we return to out camper. Muir and Cirque Lakes - only for you, Tina!
Tina: "Ist doch schön am See, oder?" Udo: "Fall bloß nicht rein!"
Tina: "It is beautiful at the lake, isn't it?" Udo: "Don't fall into the water!"
Wir tauschen das Zelt wieder mit dem Camper und fahren in Richtung Norden zum White Mtn. Auf dem Weg dorthin kommen wir am Bristlecone Pine Wald vorbei. Die Bäume sind gewiss keine Schönheit, aber eine Seltenheit und sind, mit bis zu 4.800 Jahren, die ältesten noch lebenden Bäume. Wahre Überlebenskünstler, die sich mit extrem nährstoffarmen Böden arrangieren können. Sie wachsen ausgesprochen langsam, ihr Holz ist sehr hart und harzreich, das Krankheiten und Insekten widersteht.
We swap the tent with our camper again and are heading north towards White Mtn. On our way we pass the Ancient Bristlecone Pine forest. The trees are not the prettiest, but a rarity, and with an age of up to 4,800 years, the oldest living trees. The Bristlecones grow in soils other plants find to harsh for survival. They produce only tiny amounts of new growth each year, but that wood is hard, resin-filled and very resistant to insects, disease and decay.
Von hier aus scheint der Gipfel des White Mtn in greifbarer Nähe. Mit 4.316m ist er der dritt höchste Berg in Kalifornien. Wir müssen auf der insgesamt 24km langen Wanderung "nur noch" 1.000 Höhenmeter überwinden - ziemlich anstrengend, wir halten auch dem heftigen Wind stand und kommen nach ca vier Stunden auf dem Gipfel an.
From here, it seems that the summit of White Mtn is almost in reach. With 14,242ft it is the third highest mountain in California. All we have to do on the 14 mile hike, is to "only" hike up an elevation gain of 3,000ft - quite strenuous, we manage to keep up with the fierce wind and finally reach the summit after four hours.
Im Westen der USA bestimmt die "Fünfte Jahreszeit", die der Waldbrände und die damit einhergehende Rauchentwicklung, unsere Wander-und Routenplanung. Die Sonne scheint hier jeden Tag, daher ist für uns der Feuer-und Rauchbericht sowie die Windrichtung und -stärke ausschlaggebend. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass sich die Situation sehr schnell ändern kann - verrauchte Tage und strahlend blauer Himmel wechseln manchmal über Nacht. Solange die schönen Tage überwiegend, bleiben wir auf der Ostseite der Sierra Nevada.
So genießen wir noch ein paar schöne Wanderungen wir hier zum Brainerd Lake bei Big Pine...
Our hiking and route planning in the western parts of the US is determined by the "fifth season" - the season of forest fires and resultant smoke development. We have sun shine here every day, for us the fire and smoke report as well as the wind forecast with direction and strength is more decisive. What makes it more complicated though, is that the situation can change very quickly - smoky days and blue skies sometimes change over night. As long as the nice days prevail, we stay on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada.

Heute ist der 30. August, unser 30. Hochzeitstag - zur Feier des Tages gönnen wir uns ein Himbeertörtchen mit Cappuccino am "Convict Lake" - oh je, ob das gut geht?
Today is August 30, our 30th wedding anniversary - we celebrate this day with a raspberry cake with a cappuccino at the "Convict Lake - oh dear, not sure this will go well?
Östlich des Yosemite National Parks am Tioga Pass liegt das weniger bekannte aber wunderschöne "Twenty Lake Basin". Wir sind dort fast allein unterwegs.
The rather not well known but beautiful Twenty Lake Basin is located east of Yosemite NP near the Tioga Pass. We are pretty much on our own here.
Nur zu unserer Mittagspause bekommen wir zutraulichen Besuch, der bestimmt auf eine zufällig runter gefallene Karotte oder Nuss spekuliert - am besten beides!
Only during our lunch break, a trusting visitor pops by, probably speculating for a incidental drop of a carrot or nut - or preferably both!
Die nächsten Tage haben wir für den Yosemite National Park eingeplant.
Vom Gipfel des 3.000m hohen Clouds Rest genießen wir die unglaubliche Aussicht in alle Richtungen, besonders nach unten! Uns gegenüber blicken wir auf den berühmten Half Dome mit seiner "halben" abgeschnitten aussehenden Granitformation, der das Yosemite Valley überragt.
The next days are planned for Yosemite National Park.
The 9,926-foot summit of Clouds Rest provides a sublime vista in all directions, especially down! We are looking at the famous Half Dome overtopping the Yosemite Valley with its "half" cut-off granite formation.
Es ist ein wunderschöner Tag - wir folgen einem Teilstück des PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) entlang des Tuolumne River bis zum Glen Aulin Camp.
What a wonderful day - we hike part of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) along the Tuolumne River to Glen Aulin Camp.
Der Wind dreht, der Rauch ist zurück - wir fahren früher als geplant zu Tim nach San Francisco.
Wir verbringen eine Woche in der Bay Area - besuchen Freunde, erledigen noch ein paar Reparaturen an unserem Fahrzeug und verbringen viel Zeit mit Tim und Anja.
The wind direction changes, the smoke is back - we are headed to visit Tim in San Francisco earlier than planed.
We spend one week in the Bay Area, visit friends, do some repairs on our rig and enjoy some wonderful time with Tim and Anja.
Bei Tim ist die Honigernte geplant - 76 Rahmen müssen geschleudert werden, da sind viele helfende Hände nötig. Seine fleißigen Bienen haben diesmal 120kg Honig produziert!
Tim plans a honey harvest - 76 frames have to be centrifugated - a lot of helping hands are needed. This time his diligent bees produced 265 pounds of honey.
Die Bienen sind über die Aktion natürlich nicht erfreut. Jetzt haben sie wieder ihre Ruhe und wir kehren in den Yosemite National Park zurück.
Die Waldbrandsituation hat sich nicht wirklich verbessert und die Windrichtung ist nicht zu unseren Gunsten. Wir schauen mal, ob die Luft auf dem 3.976m hohen Mt Dana besser ist. Auf nur 4km müssen wir ca 1.000 Höhenmeter überwinden - hier geht jeder Schritt nach oben! Die Sicht auf den Mono Lake unter uns und Saddleback Lake in der Ferne ist wunderschön, wenn auch nicht super klar.
The bees are not at all amused of this action. But now they will be left alone again and we return to the Yosemite NP.
The wildfire situation has not really improved and the direction of wind forecast is not in our favor. We want to find out whether the air quality is better on top of the 13,942ft high Mt Dana. Every step is up to cover the 3,000ft elevation gain on a fairly short 2,5 mile hike (one way). The view of Mono Lake and Saddleback Lake in the further distance is quite pretty, even if not super clear.
Die Luft auf dem Pass ist definitiv besser als im Tal. Wir bleiben in einer Höhe von ca 3.000m und wandern in den nächsten Tagen zum Parker Pass Lake...
The air quality at the pass is definitively better than down in the valley. We remain at an elevation of approx 10,000ft and hike the next days to Parker Pass Lake...
...und auf den Gaylor Peak. Bis uns der Rauch auch hier einholt. Es wird mit jedem Tag schlimmer - nun macht es wirklich keinen Spaß mehr. Frustriert fahren wir ins nächste Dorf und schauen uns den "Fire and Smoke Report" und die Windvorhersage an!
...and to Gaylor Peak until the smoke catches up with us again. It is getting worse every day - and now we don't enjoy it anymore. Pretty much frustrated, we head to the next town to check the fire and smoke report as well as the wind forecast!
Ein neuer Waldbrand ist südlich von uns im Sequoia NP ausgebrochen, daher der viele Rauch. Laut Vorhersage soll der Wind in den nächsten Tagen auf Nord drehen - wir sind optimistisch und tatsächlich, zwei Tage später ist wieder blauer Himmel.
A new forest fire broke out in the Sequoia NP just south of our location - that explains the heavy smoke. According to the latest forecast the wind will change its direction to north - we are optimistic and yes, we have blue skies again two days later.
So einen blauen Himmel und gutes Wetter muss man ausnutzen - eine gute Gelegenheit unserem Camper mal eine Ruhepause zu gönnen.
Wir packen die Rucksäcke und Zelt und gehen für fünf Tage in dem "Back Country" der Sierra Nevada wandern.
You have to make use of such blue skies and great weather - a good opportunity to give our rig a break.
We pack our backpacks and tent and go hiking in the back country of the Sierra Nevada for five days.
Der Wetterbericht hält zunächst was er verspricht - es ist ein traumhafter Tag, in traumhafter Natur. Unser erstes Etappenziel ist der 1.000 Island Lake. Wir finden einen genialen Campingplatz mit herrlicher Aussicht. Hier verbringen wir die ersten zwei Nächte und erkunden tagsüber mit dem Daypack die Umgebung. Dieses Vorgehen finden wir ganz praktisch - brauchen keinen schweren Rucksack zu tragen und das Zelt nicht auf und ab zu bauen!
The weather forecast keeps what it promised - it is a great day in a great scenery. On our first leg we hike to 1,000 Island Lake. We manage to find a perfect camping spot with a magnificent view. We decide to stay here for the first two nights and explore the area with a day pack. We find this quite useful - no need to carry heavy backpacks and to pitch up our tent again.
Zum Vergleich - hier hat sich der Wind nicht an die Vorhersage gehalten! Der Rauch kehrt zurück! Doch in den Bergen ändert sich das Wetter bekanntermaßen sehr schnell - jetzt wieder zu unserem Vorteil - wir haben Glück!
Just for comparison purposes - the wind does not match with the forecast anymore! The smoke is back! However, it is well known that the weather in mountains changes very quickly - this time to our advantage - we are lucky!
Für die nächsten zwei Nächte suchen wir uns einen neuen Übernachtungsplatz. Wer die Wahl hat, hat die Qual. Die Seen hier oben in den Bergen sind alle wunderschön. Garnet Lake gefällt uns sehr, wir laufen aber trotzdem noch ein paar km weiter zum Lake Ediza. Wir schlagen unser Zelt oberhalb des Sees auf und genießen bei "Kaffee und Keks" die herrliche Bergkulisse.
We look for a new camping spot for the next two nights. Not an easy choice given the many beautiful options. All the lakes up here are just gorgeous. We really do like Garnet Lake, but decide to hike a couple of miles to Lake Ediza. We pitch up our tent above the lake and enjoy the great vista of the mountains while having a cup of coffee and a biscuit.

...und nach einer rutschigen Kletterpartie über loses Geröll zu dem noch höher gelegenen Cecile Lake.

Ein letzter Blick auf Lake Ediza, bevor wir uns wieder auf den Rückweg machen. Alles hat prima geklappt und viel Spaß gemacht. Wir haben in den letzten fünf Tagen in ca 3.000m Höhe rund 65km zurückgelegt!
A final glance at Lake Ediza, before we are heading back. Everything worked out well and we enjoyed our back country trip. The last five days we hiked some 40 miles at an elevation of 10,000ft.
Obwohl wir jetzt schon so lange in der Eastern Sierra Nevada unterwegs sind, gibt es immer noch viele Canyons, Gipfel und Seen, die wir nicht kennen. Wir haben gerade ein absolut "Schön-Wetter Fenster" mit strahlend blauen Himmel.

Even though we have spend quite some time in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, there are still many canyons, summits and lakes we haven't been yet. We do have an absolute "perfect weather window" with crystal blue skies.

Es ist inzwischen zweifelslos herbstlich geworden - sonnige Tage, frostige Nächte und die Espen in schönsten Farben.
Südlich von Mammoth Lakes erkunden wir den McGee Creek Canyon - 10km (one way) bis zum 3.200m hoch gelegenen Big McGee Lake.
Well, without a doubt, fall is coming - sunny days, frosty nights and aspen leaves in their most beautiful colors.
South of Mammoth Lakes we explore McGee Creek Canyon - 6,5 miles (one way) to Big McGee Lake at 10,000ft elevation.
Ein Tal weiter nördlich hat der Convict Creek seinen eigenen Canyon geformt. Die Farben und Formationen der Felsen sind unglaublich schön. Der 8km lange Weg auf ca 3.300m Höhe, über teilweise schwierige Strecken, fordert uns nochmal richtig heraus - doch die faszinierende Natur entschädigt für die Kletterpartien in Hanglagen.
One valley further up north, Convict Creek created its own canyon. The rock colors and formations are of stunning beauty. The 5 mile hike over stretches of pretty difficult terrain at an elevation of 10,000ft is a real challenge - the fascinating scenery however, compensates for scrambling sections near cliffs.
Die Eastern Sierra Nevada gefällt uns immer besser, doch bevor wir hier "Wurzeln schlagen" und der Winter uns einholt, ziehen wir ein bisschen wehmütig weiter. Wir möchten gerne noch zum Great Basin National Park im Osten von Nevada, bevor dort der erste Schnee fällt.
We start liking the Eastern Sierra Nevada more and more, however, before we start making roots here and the winter is catching up on us, we somewhat reluctantly decide to move on. We would still like to get to the Great Basin NP in the eastern part of Nevada, before the first snow hits.
