Welcome to the USA. Wir fahren bei Nogales über die Grenze. Jetzt sind wir im Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten, was wir auch gleich in dem Westernstädtchen Tombstone feststellen.
Welcome to the USA. We cross the border at Nogales. We are now in the country of unlimited possibilities and we notice this quite soon in the small Westerntown of Tombstone.
Arizona, Tombstone - das ist doch der wilde Westen - und nicht nur aus den Western Filmen. Der Friedhof ist Zeuge von den alten Zeiten und hier ging es nicht immer rechtens zu wie die ein oder andere Grabinschrift zeigt. Waffen sind auf jeden Fall nicht erlaubt.
Arizona, Tombstone - if this isn't the "wild west", we don't know what is - and not only from western movies. The graveyard is proof of the old days where not everything was handled the most diplomatic way as some of the tombstones show. In any case, guns are not allowed here anymore.
Doch "Schießereien" wie in alten Tagen gibt es immer noch in Tombstone. Die Luft ist hier recht bleihaltig.
Shootings like in the old days are still common in Tombstone. There are still plenty of "bullets" flying around.
"The best Saloon in Town". Wir haben bei Country Musik und Wisky das Tanzbein bis spät in die Nacht geschwungen. Doch wer am Schluß nicht die Rechnung bezahlt hat schlechte Karten.
"The best saloon in town". We enjoyed the evening dancing until late in the night with country music and whisky. If you don't pay the bill at the end of the day, you have a problem!
Hier wird noch Westernflair gelebt. Als John Wayne und Clint Eastwood Fans hatten wir hier unseren Spaß.
The real western flair can still be lived here. As fans of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood we had a great time.
Ein Gewitter zieht auf. Es wird Zeit die "PS" zu starten und nach Nordwesten Richtung Tucson zu "reiten".
A thunderstorm pulls up. Now it is time to get the "Horse Power" started again and to "ride" in a northwestern direction towards Tucson.

Nach einem "kurzen Ritt" erreichen wir den Colossal Cave Mountain Park, der an den Saguaro East National Park grenzt.
After a "short ride" we reach the Colossal Cave Mountain Park, which borders the Saguaro East National Park.
Wir staunen, es ist gerade Kaktusblüte - die wohl schönste Zeit in der Sonora Wüste. Sogar die großen Saguaro Kakteen zeigen ihre Blütenpracht.
We are excited, as it is the blossening time for cacti and probably the most beautiful time in the Sonora desert. Even the giant Saguaro cacti are posing with their awesome flowers.
Wir sind so verliebt in die Landschaft, dass wir viel länger bleiben als ursprünglich geplant. Wir genießen die Zeit, wandern und fotografieren.
We stay longer as originally planned, as we really like this area. We enjoy the time, hike and take photos.
Auf einer unserer Wanderungen hatten wir eine unliebsame Begegnung. Gerade die "Schießerei" in Tombstone überlebt, wäre Udo die Bekanntschaft mit dieser Klapperschlange fast zum Verhängnis geworden. Er konnte sich gerade noch mit einem Sprung in die stacheligen Gewächse am Wegesrand außer Gefahr bringen.
On one of our hikes we made a rather unpleasant encounter. Having survived the "shooting" in Tombstone, Udo's confrontation with this rattle snake could have ended fataly. A jump into the spiny plants along the trail got him out of danger.
Hier noch ein paar Fakten zu den Saguaro Kakteen: Sie werden bis zu 200 Jahre alt und können mehr als 15 Meter hoch werden. Erst mit 30 Jahren beginnen sie zu blühen und mit 75 Jahren wachsen die Seitenarme.
Here are some facts of the Saguaro cactus: They can reach an age of 200 years and can grow up to 15 meters high. They start flowering after 30 years and the sidearms only grow after 75 years.

Wir fahren nur 20 Meilen weiter und sind plötzlich in einer "ganz anderen Welt". Von der Kakteenwüste in den Kiefernwald auf den Mt Lemmon und ca 3.000 Metern Höhe.
We are driving just another 20 miles and are, all of a sudden, in a "completely different world". From cacti dessert, to pine forest on Mt Lemmon at approx 3,000 meters altitude.
Wir finden einen idyllischen Campingplatz mitten im Wald. Der unschöne braune Kasten im Bild ist eine Bärenkiste. Keine Angst,- da sitzt kein Bär drin, sie dient der bärensicheren Aufbewahrung von Lebensmitteln.
We find this idyllic campsite in the midst of the forest. The rather unpleasant brown box in the picture is a bear box. No worries, there is no bear inside,- it is used for the bear safe storage of food.
Es gibt viele wunderschöne Wanderwege, wie hier um diesen See.
You will find a lot of beautiful hikes here, like the one around this lake.
Am nächsten Tag unternehmen wir eine abwechslungsreiche und kräftezehrende Wanderung in Gipfelhöhe. Mal mit fantastischen Panoramablick ins Tal....
The next day we do a diverse and strenuous hike around the summit. Sometimes with stunning panorama views down the valley...

... und dann wieder durch Kiefernwald.
... and then again pine forest.
Wir haben für 15 km über Stock und Stein und auf und ab, fünf Stunden gebraucht (mit Pausen).
It took us five hours (with breaks) to hike the 15 km stretch up and down across all terrain.
Es ist eine traumhaft schöne Landschaft, auch wenn die Luft in dieser Höhe für uns ungewohnt dünn ist.
This is an awesome scenery, even if the "air is a bit thin" for us at this altitude.

Nach der Erkundung des Mt Lemmon kehren wir wieder in die Wüste zurück, dieses Mal zum Saguaro West National Park.
After having explored Mt Lemmon we return to the desert, this time to the Saguaro West National Park.
Wieder probieren wir mit Begeisterung die tollen Wanderwege aus.
With full enthusiasm we explore the scenic hiking trails.
Uns begegnet keine Menschenseele, nur ein paar tierische Wüstenbewohner scheinen über unser Auftauchen überrascht.
We didn't come across any human beings, only some desert animals seem to be astonished to see us popping up.
Den Kohlibri auf dem Nest, haben wir allerdings in dem Sonora Desert Museum entdeckt. Eine wunderschön angelegte und informative "open air live - Ausstellung" über alles was in dieser Gegend lebt.
We detected the humming bird in the nest in the Sonora Desert Museum. A beautiful and informative "open air live - presentation" of everything which lives in this area.
Alle anderen Vögel, die uns vor die Linse gekommen sind, scheinen Stachel resistente Füße zu haben...?
All other birds which we managed to capture by photo, seem to have spine resistent feet...?
Der Gila Specht zimmert jedes Jahr ein neues Nest in den Saguaro. Dem Kaktus macht das nichts aus und die alten Spechthöhlen werden dann gerne von anderen Vögeln bezogen. Besonders hübsch fanden wir diese Wohnungswahl - mit Dachgarten.
The Gila woodpecker builds its nest in the Saguara every year anew. The cactus can live with this and the abandoned nests are reinhabitated by other birds. A rather pretty nest selection was the one with a roofgarden.
Wir waren viel länger als ursprünglich geplant in der Umgebung von Tucson. Nun wird es wirklich Zeit weiter zu ziehen...
We spent much more time in Tucson than originally planned. Now it is time to move on...

Auf dem Weg zum Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument kommen wir durch einen Ort mit äußerst fragwürdigen Namen - "Why" (Warum). Im Ort angekommen, stoßen wir auf das einzige Restaurant - "Why Not" (Warum Nicht)!!
On our way to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument we passed through a town with a rather strange name - "Why". Once in the town we find the only restaurant - "Why Not"!!

Ok, hier kommen die ersten; rechts im Bild.

Die Landschaft ist großartig weit, aber eintöniger als im Saguaro NP. Wie in jedem Park gibt es auch hier unzählige Wanderwege. Je weiter wir ins Hinterland laufen, desto mehr Organ Pipe Kakteen tauchen auf. Leider ist ihre Blütezeit erst im Juni/Juli.
The landscape is great, but more monotonous than in the Saguaro NP. Again, there are plenty of hiking trails. More and more Organ Pipe Cacti pop up the further we hike into the back country. Unfortunately, they flower only during June/July.
Ein einziger Kaktus hat sich im Monat geirrt und Udo hat ihn entdeckt. Da hat sich der weite Weg doch gelohnt!
Only one cactus seem to get the flowering season wrong and Udo discovered him. The long hike paid off.
